Recent finds..
Collected  series of pieces earlier in the week over two days, the weather was rather changeable. Documenting the pieces as found, as portraits. Currently working on a series of spoons for Galerie Ra, a CBS exhibition and also working on two sets of exhibition pieces- pics soon. Lots going on and plans for more.. 😉

Process of a piece.
Here is a little photo essay of the evolution of a piece- from collected/selected- to composition -to drawing -to assembly. The object is selected on one of my walks, something about it catches my eye to the point where I can’t walk past it. Picked up and documented I then think about what I might make with it and try out various compositions with other found pieces or fabricated parts. There is a good deal of play at this point- sometimes I find I need to make a new piece to compliment the collected thing or to connect two elements together. Often nothing quite satisfactory appears and the piece is set to one side, for later consideration and I lift another. In this case I will come back to the piece -especially if it has a particular pull, sometimes another piece or another find will suddenly make a find work. Occasionally I will do a drawing of the piece I am thinking of- this attempts to capture the essence of the piece and helps focus on what shouldn’t be disturbed in the assembly process. How things are attached are a vital part of maintaining or extending the visual character of a piece- done badly and a the work can loose it’s essence. Once I think I know how to proceed I’ll assemble the piece- usually there is multiple attempts to get it just right or troubleshoot problems. When it looks right to me I know it is done – some pieces fail at this stage though so every piece is never a done deal. I hope this gives a sense of how i make and some of what goes into a piece.

Coastline walk
Yesterday was overcast so I took a short walk down by the water edge of Belfast Lough- I always love the different moods of the Lough dependant on the weather transforming from vivid blues to steely greys and flashes of silver. Looked at lots of textures, structures and forms as well as a few finds.
beach observations 26/5/14 and upcoming plans
Some images from a recent walk on the beach. The photography side of my practice is primarily concerned with my visual exploration of different landscapes, basically reflecting my interests as I try and gather a sense of a place. I don’t see myself as a photographer – the drive to take these images is from my making and a love of place, photography is part of  my practice and supportive of it but it is not the focus.
These experiences within the  landscape are what inspires the physical pieces I make and my aim over the coming year is to integrate these experiences of walking, documenting, gathering and making into a holistic practice. These elements will combine into an exhibition and hopefully a book, while still making sense as individual pieces/works. Really mirroring this blog -jumping from photographs to drawings, to collected objects and finished pieces- but gathered and presented as a considered overall composition. I am able to take the time to do this through the very generous Rosemary James Award which is allowing me to buy time to research and develop my practice over the coming year. I have already used some of the Award to buy a new camera- hopefully the improvement in image quality is evident as I have switched from my iPhone to my new Fuji x100s – a small fixed lens camera I’m still getting used to but capable of startling results.
